Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How is ShiftUp Collective different from a traditional NGO?
Unlike traditional top-down aid models, ShiftUp is a “Proximity-First” Community-Based Organization. We don’t just provide temporary relief; we build systems. By combining local grassroots presence in Kwale with international professional standards (Systems Excellence), we ensure that our solutions are designed by the community, for the community, ensuring long-term sustainability.
Where does ShiftUp Collective primarily operate?
We are currently rooted in Kwale County, Kenya, with our headquarters serving as a hub for local innovation. While our physical operations are focused on the Kwale ecosystem, our frameworks for Green Innovation and Creative Futures are designed to be scalable models for other coastal and rural regions across East Africa.
How can international organizations partner with you?
We welcome partnerships that align with our 6-pillar framework. International partners can support us through direct project funding, technical knowledge exchange, or by sourcing sustainable products from our Threads of Change fashion collective. We provide all partners with transparent data reporting and regular impact audits to ensure accountability
How do you ensure the transparency of your programs?
Transparency is one of our core values under the Systems Excellence pillar. We maintain a “Digital Vault” of our legal constitution and research. Furthermore, we utilize data-driven tracking for all our impact metrics—such as waste upcycled or income growth—and share these reports openly with our stakeholders and donors.
How is ShiftUp Collective funded?
We utilize a hybrid sustainability model. Our operations are supported through a combination of strategic grants, private donor partnerships, and revenue generated from our social enterprises, like the Threads of Change fashion collective. This diversified approach ensures that our community programs remain stable and are not reliant on a single source of income
